Microneedling, also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy is at center stage in the skin and beauty business. The science behind it is quite fascinating. By lightly puncturing the skin multiple times, the body creates an autoimmune response. As a result, the skin is tricked into thinking it’s been damaged, therefore building back its own collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen is protein that gives the skin the look of being plump, wrinkle free, and youthful. Hyaluronic acid is what attracts and binds water to the skin. Age and sun damage diminish both, resulting in dehydrated, sagging, wrinkled, and hyperpigmented skin.
It used to be laser that was the big “go to” treatment for collagen induction. Burning the skin with a laser created a scenario to damage the skin and reproduce collagen. Microneedling has an edge on laser because of the fact that it is less invasive and far less likely to cause long term damage that can occur with a laser, primarily visible signs of having been burned. Microneedling has minimal downtime, a day or two, and is recognized as a safer way to induce collagen production in the skin.
The other benefit happens when the skin is microneedled, small channels are created and there’s a direct pathway to the dermis. This allows us direct access to the source to produce growth factor. We’re able to treat multiple skin conditions including anti-aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, and the improvement in the appearance of noticeable scars on the body. We’re even able to treat around the eye area by pulling the skin away from the eye and using the orbital bone as a backstop.
Microneedling used to consist of rollers with tiny needles. Technology has improved the practice by creating electric medical devices with needles whose depth can be adjusted depending on the area of the face or body being treated. Using a medical grade topical anesthetic, the treatment is largely pain free.
A treatment series consists of six treatments over a six-month period, therefore, one treatment a month. Maintenance consists of one treatment a year, subsequently. While six treatments will give the most ideal results, it’s amazing how even just one treatment can create a more rejuvenated look.
